Birch Pyrography

I only use birch bark from trees that have already fallen and are starting to decompose.
Once the tree has begun to rot, the bark easily separates from the wood and generally has more character:
rough edges,  and maybe a bit of lichen or moss.

I would never want to strip bark from a live tree as that could kill the birch tree. Especially when there is an abundance of bark on the ground along backroads, or hiking trails. So, I collect it. Sometimes I find unexpected gifts of bark by my door or mailbox.

I like to work with images that celebrate nature.

These pictures are wood-burned directly into the bark with a wood-burning tool.
